Ann Barnes is Chair of the Kent Police Authority. Mrs Barnes was first appointed as a magistrate member in 2001. The Authority elected her as Chair in June 2005. Her appointment was renewed in October 2008 as an independent member.
A Lancastrian by birth, Ann moved to Kent 30 years ago and lives in Lyminge with her family. Ann is a teacher by profession and in her 27 year career taught firstly English and then Business to post 16 students.
A magistrate since 1986, Ann is Chair of the East Kent Family Panel and a member of the Kent Family Justice Council.
KPA committee membership and role:
- Chair of Kent Police Authority
- Joint East Kent area liaison member with responsibility for Canterbury
- Member of all Authority committees
- Joint statutory committee with Essex
- Member of Kent Partnership
As chair:
- oversees Authority meetings, applying standing orders and making sure members have a fair opportunity to speak
- represents the KPA to the press and outside organisations
- liaises with the Chief Executive, Treasurer and Chief Constable to facilitate KPA business
- holds regular strategic meetings with the Chief Constable
- attends regular networks and national gatherings as requested

- Association of Police Authorities (APA). Role includes: Board member, Deputy Chair of APA, Chair of Police Negotiating Board, Staffing Committee, Chief Officer Committee and representative for Women in Policing
- Kent People's Trust
