Purpose and responsibilities
The Professional Standards Committee maintains standards and handles complaints for Kent Police.
The Professional Standards Committee will:
- oversee complaints and misconduct concerning senior police officers, as well as issues relating to police pension forfeiture and business interest appeals for all officers.
- monitor how the Force handles complaints concerning misconduct by its police officers and staff.
- look at the handling of complaints relating to racial incidents.
- monitor complaints relating to the direction and control of the force.
- monitor standards of professionalism and integrity by police officers and staff.
- monitor how the Authority and the Force comply with duties imposed on them by the Human Rights Act 1998.
- oversee the Kent Police Authority’s scheme for independently monitoring treatment of people in custody (ICV scheme).
- receive regular updates on the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) investigations of Kent Police incidents.
- monitor the management of civil claims against police officers and staff.
- consider reports of internal reviews in accordance with the Audit and Governance Committee.
- monitor government, police authorities and other external agency proposals, advice and actions relating to professional standards and advise the Authority or Chief Constable as appropriate.
- consider related risks and risk management issues.
